Today we are going to look at dreaming and consider what they are to start our Unit on States of Consciousness. During this Unit we will keep a dream journal that will be explained in class. We will start this Unit by looking at the Nova film- What Are Dreams and answer the questions that go with the film in our course workbook (page 53). We will learn about the science and insights that we have learned from and about dreams as well as take a practice test in creativity known as the remote associates test.

Dream Journal instructions- due date May 13th
Directions- page 1
1. Over the next two weeks you will keep track and record your dreams. You will need to record 7 dreams over the two week period. If you cannot remember your dreams you can use dreams from your past or you can interview others (friends and family) about their dreams.
2. Do not write about items you do not want others to know about. If it is a dream with an issue or a theme that you do not feel comfortable with do not share it. I am a high school teacher not a therapist so understand I cannot help you! Plus this packet will not be kept under lock and key. :)
3. Write down the dream after you wake up in as much detail as you can. If you wake up in the middle of the night try writing down a key idea or thought to trigger the recall of the dream in the morning so you can remember as much as possible about the dream. If you are writing the dream of another person ask follow up questions about the context and mood of the dream. If you are writing about dreams from your past look at the events that were going on in your life at the time of the dream.
4. For the purpose of this journal we are going to look at the symbols of the dream. The psychodynamic perspective says that the dream can be a window to the subconscious mind giving us a view of our unconscious motives and desires or reflections into the anxieties and stresses in our lives. We are going to try and look at our dreams from this perspective for the purpose of this activity. Our dream interpretations in this journal should look beyond the literal events of the dream and what they might tell us about how we are handling our daily experiences at the subconscious level. As always it is important to understand that I expect you to understand how to apply this perspective which is much different than asking you to subscribe to the perspective.
We are going to be looking at the latent content not the manifest content of the dream for purpose of interpretation and what the dream might be saying about your life.

On page 14 of the dream journal you will find a list of a few common dream themes. Interpretation for many symbols in dreams are very personal as we have our own points of view and experiences from which we see reality. But we are all part of a larger culture in which some aspects of our world view might be shaped. We see many people from different walks of life experience similar dream themes that might share some popular culture influences. At the beginning of this unit I talked to you about my friends dream in which her brakes went out and she ran over a bunch of children. This was honestly not a dream about taking her car in for service but a much deeper fear of a life that was now out of control and possibly taking away her future family plans. So thing about the events in your dreams and see if they could fit into these sorts of interpretations that we are looking at today. Recall that looking at these hidden meanings is from the point of view of the psychodynamic perspective.

Dream symbols can have general themes but they can also be intensely personal. A tool used by a psychologist from the psychodynamic perspective is the free association chart. The reactions and first impressions to words might give psychologists working from this perspective keen insight into the subconscious feelings, desires and needs of an individual. These insights might help the psychologist understand connections to the imagery of dreams to the waking reality of client that is seeking insights into what their dreams might reveal about their motivations and stress in their daily lives. Turn to page 13 in your dream journal and write down the first word or phrase that comes to mind from the following list. Behind each word note its emotional impact on yourself. Place a + sign if the word has a positive impact, place a - sign behind the word if it is a negative connotation and finally if the feeling is neutral place a 0. We are doing this to see how these tools are used and how they might give impacts.
Review of Sleep Information-
Today we will be doing a general review of sleep through crash course and listen to a couple of sleep experts (Rebecca Robbins PHD Brigham Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School and Dr. David Rapoport Icahn School or Medicine at Mount Sinai) discuss and debunk common myths about sleep- You will have at least 30 minutes to work on your DREAM JOURNAL which is due next Tuesday the 7th.

I will also play a video on 50 sleep facts- Enjoy this final day of sleep before we explore other altered states and altered realities as we finish up this semester- We will talk about the influence of the social situation on our realities with a look into cults, conformity and following directions. We will look at hypnosis, drugs and role expectation (including the belief in the paranormal) on behaviors as well. We are fast approaching the end of this class so I hope you enjoy.

What is Parapsychology? Could it account for radical shifts in behavior and conscious experience?
Today we are going to look at Parapsychology which is the study of alleged psychic or paranormal phenomena. It is considered to be pseudoscience and is rejected by the majority or mainstream scientists. This field would be interested in studying telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, near death experiences, apparitional experiences including possession. Parapsychology has been criticized for continuing investigation despite being unable to provide convincing evidence for the existence of any psychic phenomena after more than a century of research.
We will look at cases of possession today in class. You will have a chance to read two articles and draw your own conclusions about what you think about this topic. Each reading will represent a different point of view on possession- one from someone that believes it is possible to another that is very skeptical on the subject.

Chemical abuse can have devastating consequences on individuals, families and communities. Chemicals can save lives and allow for individuals to have a chance to thrive or heal. Our Conscious experience is shaped in many ways by the way we take in sensory data which allows us to shape our perceptions of the world. Today we will learn a few things about this process. Today we are just going to take a quick look into the world of mental health- If you find the topics today interesting you might consider taking a class in Abnormal Psychology during your post secondary education.
There are several categories of mental health issues that impact humans including the anxiety disorders, mood disorders and psychotic disorders. Most are treatable to help people engage in normal pursuits and relationships. How and who defines mental health has both an objective and sometimes subjective side that can lead to confusion when trying to understand the variety of issues that can impact our mental health
The APA has produced a diagnostic guide to mental health issues which is currently on its 5th edition. It is known as the DSM V.
I will try and pass around a copy of the DSM IV revised edition.
