To enhance your chances for success in this class it is suggested that you follow
the suggestions and strategies listed below:
1. Motivation- Examine and remind yourself why you are taking this class.
If you have a purpose it will enhance your focus to attend to the concepts-
2. Active Listening- engage your brain in the lecture experience- try and
personalize the concepts to your own life experiences- By tying concepts
to your own life experiences you enhance recall and understanding of
the concepts and information- in your notes engage in tying the concepts
to anchors (examples) that you understand or have experienced.
3. Immediate Review- to enhance your chances of success with the concepts
we talk about in this class you should review the information covered in class
sometime that day- either at home or school-
4. Attend Regularly- without attending you will miss content and lose the structure
and framework that regular attendance gives which can enhance the recall of
content and the learning of new content
5. Context Cues and Recall- try and find a regular place to review or study the
content- that way if you get lost in thought or if an idea is on the tip of your
tongue you might visualize your study space and have that sense of place trigger
the recall of the information or concept-
6. Last Minute Review- review the material the night before the test and in the
morning or the time before a test-
7. Distribute Study- do not spend to much of your time on any one subject. Mix it
up and keep it fresh- Studies have shown that it is best to study in several short
blocks than one large block of time when learning material-
Using Your Text Book-
The author of our text designed it with a specific reading method in mind.
He would like you to apply the principles of the PQ3R reading method.
Our author describes the steps and skills of this method in the beginning
skills section of your text book. I have listed a brief overview below:
P- preview / scan the headings of the chapter you have been assigned
Q- question- after you finish previewing the headings take time to rephrase
the heading into a question. For example the heading is "Goals of Psychology"-
change it to "What are the Goals of Psychology".
R- read- read the section until you find the answer of the question at hand. If
you need to read for further understanding do so if you do not- do not.
R- recite- recite and rehearse the information you learned from reading that
answered your question.
R- review- take time to review the information in an immediate fashion and
review it before an examine.
